The primary bedroom at ReRanch LA is a study in how thoughtful construction can transform a compact space into an atmosphere of calm and light. At fifteen by nine feet, the room is modest in size but ambitious in intention. Built by T.R. Wurster Construction and designed by Archetype Design Collective, the renovation elevates a standard postwar ranch bedroom into a luminous retreat shaped by volume, texture, reclaimed materials, and quiet wellness integrations.

A Room Transformed Through Building Precision

The original bedroom was low, dark, and visually compressed. TRW elevated the experience by opening the flat ceiling into a vaulted form, creating vertical lift and a sculptural geometry that captures passing light. A small gable window washes the ceiling in natural illumination, and programmable coves introduce soft gradients of artificial light.

A movable glass wall extends the room outward to the garden terrace. Beyond the opening, TRW repurposed a reclaimed glass canopy from the Gladstones Malibu oceanfront dining room, adapting it as a protective outdoor element that anchors the indoor and outdoor connection.

Key Construction Highlights

CEILING VOLUME and LIGHT

TRW removed the original low ranch ceiling and rebuilt the volume into a vaulted geometry with crisp planes and integrated lighting. Precise framing and finish work allow natural and artificial light to move freely across the space.

RECLAIMED ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS

A reclaimed Ipe timber from the Nobu Ryokan Malibu was transformed into a chandelier that carries both lighting and a brass water manifold. The glass canopy, also reclaimed, required custom fittings and careful integration with the exterior terrace structure.

Wood, Craft, and Material Richness

European white oak was installed in a chevron pattern at the lower level and in wide planks above. Hewn Douglas fir transitions upward into a sculptural stair made from half inch steel plate. The stair cantilevers into the mezzanine, combining elegance with structural rigor.

MEZZANINE WELLNESS ENVIRONMENT

The mezzanine lounge rests beneath a salvaged glue lamb timber and includes a cedar infrared sauna and a greenhouse alcove built over a structural glass floor. A skylight salvaged from the former Bel Air residence of Michael Bay opens to introduce fresh air and daylight. TRW reinforced the attic structure to support this unique wellness environment.

LIGHTING and ATMOSPHERIC DETAILING

Brass baseboard lighting, backlit marble accents, and edge lit glass shelves were installed with hidden wiring and seamless transitions. These elements soften the space and create subtle nighttime illumination.

INTEGRATED WELLNESS TECHNOLOGY

TRW incorporated advanced air filtration, concealed sensors, programmable lighting, EMF reduction within walls, and hidden HVAC diffusers. Technology supports wellness without disturbing the architectural clarity of the room.
